The United States and Iran must go to war

According to a poll released by Reuters and Ipsos on Tuesday, 64% of Americans, including the majority of Republicans, support the Iranian nuclear agreement signed in 2015. The agreement aims to curb Iran's development of nuclear weapons by relaxing sanctions against Iran.

Against the backdrop of increasingly tense US Iran relations, approximately 51% of respondents believe that a war between the US and Iran will break out in the coming years. The proportion has increased by eight percentage points compared to June last year.

Nearly half of the Americans, 49% of the respondents, do not agree with President Trump's Iran policy, and 31% of them strongly oppose Trump's Iran policy. Meanwhile, approximately 39% of respondents expressed support for Trump. In addition, about 54% of Americans believe that Iran poses a "serious" or "direct" threat to the United States.

In May, Trump's national security advisor John Bolton presented a planned deployment of aircraft carrier fleets to the Persian Gulf, and also announced plans to send B-52 bombers to the region. A few days later, the Pentagon added the deployment of Patriot air defense missiles and amphibious landing ships in the area.

The United States accuses Iran of carrying out destructive actions against oil tankers in the United Arab Emirates, while the Houthi rebels in Yemen, supported by Iran, have launched drone attacks against Saudi oil fields. The US intelligence agency has warned that Iran and groups supported by Iran may pose a threat to US interests in the Middle East.

War Options

Analysts believe that the series of provocative actions taken by the United States while initiating an economic blockade may be interpreted by Iran as a direct military threat. They are concerned that any unexpected event, intentional or unintentional, may lead to the situation getting out of control and trigger intense regional wars.

If Iran were to launch an attack on the US military first, 79% of respondents would advocate for retaliatory action by the US military. 40% of them advocate launching airstrikes on Iran, while 39% prefer a full-scale attack on Iran.

The Reuters and Ipsos poll was conducted from May 17th to 20th, with a total of 1007 American citizens interviewed. Among the respondents were 350 registered Democratic voters, 289 registered Republican voters, and 181 independent voters.
